Heart to Heart!

OK, it's time for a heart-to-heart.....if you live in the north you can't possibly know what our fellow rescuers in the south face every day. There are agonizing decisions about (literally) who lives and dies because they have too many dogs surrendered, found as strays, dumped at their doorsteps, and born in their care and it's just unmanageable. Some of us from Lucky Pup Rescue went to a lecture about dog rescue and transportation and we heard about a shelter who has to euthanize 180 dogs a month - that's 40-50 sweet lives each Friday that are brought down the hall, if they're lucky, to a waiting needle. In many southern areas, the gas chamber is how they do it. This is NOT euthanasia, which is defined as "mercy killing" or "the practice of ending a life in a painless manner" - gassing is neither merciful or painless, and if you want to know how it affects the body you can certainly look it up. We hate thinking or talking about it.

We get lots of questions like "what can we do about it"? "we can only save one life at a time, what difference will that make long-term?" Well, part of each adoption fee goes to the southern vet for the spay or neuter fee which means one less pregnant female or one less breeding male - this can ultimately mean hundreds fewer dogs that need to be saved. Also, the rescues and shelters are helping blitz the media outlets in the south with spay/neuter messages; that is made possible by your donation as well. It's true that attitudes of the humans take a lot longer to change, but one family at a time, one dog at a time is what we can all do. Look into some of these sweet faces if you think you wouldn't make a difference by donating, fostering or adopting.

Mary's Walk

A beautiful day in so many ways! The weather was gorgeous, the crowds were as big and excited as we've ever seen them, and SO much money was raised for cancer research. We also had the pleasure of walking with the Lucky Pup Rescue team and 7 of our alumni dogs plus two friends (Scooby and Alex and their families). Check out photos of our sweeties who have found forever families. It was SO amazing to see Misty (now Emma) - one of our first fosters over a year ago! She looks amazing, as do Chloe and Reba, Tilly, Meeka (one of our newest alumni), Allie, and the handsome Arlo. There are even more pictures on our facebook page (search for "Lucky Pup Rescue"). We met a lot of wonderful people, passed out some free biscuits and had such a blast!

Our Super Sewers!

A big thank you to Mary, Judy and Beth for stitching up some beautiful vests for our Lucky Pups! Here they are, as well as sweet Katrina modelling her own gorgeous coat. We can't wait to show them off at adoption events and Mary's Walk tomorrow!

Alissa needs you!

Poor Alissa- she is only one year old and her life has been filled with chaos. In August her owner literally abandoned her at the shelter - threw her on the ground in front of witnesses. She kept looking for her owner as he drove her away. Alissa is a Catahoula Leopard Dog mix who is very sweet, only about 40 lbs and she is good with male dogs of her size or bigger (can be bossy with smaller dogs). She is too interested in chasing cats so will need a feline-free home. Alissa had found a great foster home which got too crowded and now she is living in a crate back at the shelter- she is so confused as to why she is back in a crate. Please help us get her out of her cage and into a family!

More cute puppies!

Braden, Bryce, Bryan and Buck are 4-5 month old shepherd mix puppies that are living with lots of other dogs at their foster home in the south. They need to start their new lives in a home environment where they can socialize and work on manners and training. They are adorable and we need some new pics of these handsome brothers.

Cutie-Pie Walter!

Oh my word! Walter joined us at our adoption event today and he's the cutest! He is approx 3 yrs old and is a rat terrier mix. He is so sweet with his 2-legged foster siblings and met several children during the day and was terrific with all of them. He was a little shy with bigger dogs at first meeting but given the chance he warmed up to them. He loved all the people he met and pranced around like a little cutie pie! His pictures don't do him justice - the spots on his body and inside his pointy ears are so darn cute. Here are some new pics of him. He is a 15-lb doll who will love finding a forever home where he can be pampered ; 0 )

Adult Dogs Rock!

Maybe you love potty-training, figuring out how to keep your furniture from getting chewed, and being up at night with a fuzzy puppy, but not everyone loves that or wants that. Guess what? Adult dogs can be the absolute best! Our family has decided that we are adult-dog people, and the grown-up dogs are so much fun. Not that all rescue dogs are potty-trained, but often all they need is a refresher of where the doggy-toilet is. And not all adult dogs are non-chewers, but it is easier to substitute a chewy toy for the legs of your great-grandma's chair. Some people feel that a puppy is better because you can "train them right" from the beginning, but I have to tell you that our adult rescue dogs are so darn grateful to be in a home with a loving family that they are very happy to learn what you are trying to teach them. Out of 16 foster dogs, all but a couple were adults, and we've had fantastic "luck" with every one of them. All are a little different, and respond in their own way, but with love and patience and sometimes a little professional help from our favorite trainers, they do great, and move on to their forever homes ready to love and be loved. Think about adding an adult dog to your family!

Sunshine!

This beautiful girl is an adult lab, maybe purebred, who is in foster in southern Maine. She is so sweet and loves the little girl in her foster home. She is too interested in the cat, so will likely need a feline-free home. Sunshine was a little shy when she first got her, especially with other dogs, but should settle in just fine once she finds her forever home. Sunshine does not love the crate - it comes from her recent background of being left in a cage or tied up almost all the time. This poor sweetie is probably so confused about what's happening to her and she is thriving with love and attention.

Pepper!

Pepper is here and she is SO sweet! She is an adult husky/chow mix (we think) and is totally a people dog. She is mellow and adorable and loves to please! She is housetrained and respectful. She seems to need consistent discipline so she understands she is not the boss, but she learns quickly. She can be a little iffy with adult female dogs, but she's so new to us that we may find that is just because she is afraid after all the transitions she has had. You see, she lived in a family down south, and they surrendered her because they no longer could care for her. Imagine experiencing that upheavel just when you've gotten used to living in a home. She is definitely used to "creature comforts" because she will curl up with you on the couch, follow you downstairs, and happily wait for you while you eat or get ready for a walk. She went for a jog this morning and is now snoozing! Contact us if you think you can add Pepper to your family!

Sweet Elvis!

We are amazed that Elvis is still here and available! He is a ready-made family dog! Seems like everyone is interested in puppies but if you don't want to worry about housebreaking, chewing, and saying the word "no" 500 times per day, Elvis is your guy. He is gentle and sweet, and trained. He is living with several children, dogs and cats. Elvis is only about 3 years old so has many years of health and happiness ahead. He is a perfect size, not huge and not exactly lap-size (though he sometimes thinks so). Wouldn't you like to meet this cutie?
