Make sure you know which of these cuties are the adoptable ones! A big thank you to Caroline and Maddie for carrying the Lucky Pup sign the WHOLE parade route! And to our teenage volunteers for snuggling puppies ( a hard job, we know, but SOMEone has to do it! )

Some of our available cuties joined the May Day parade and got some lovin' from the twirlers and other fans!

Easton is the small black schnauzer, and Oreo is the black and white lab puppy lovin' the baton girls. Gabby is the super close-up and her brother Garrett is pictured as well.

Maggie is now Ivy (she has the pink vest on in the bottom picture) and she enjoyed the day with her new family and some old friends like Courtney.

Ladybird is a beautiful adult English Coonhound who is doing so great and really would love to find her forever home. Foster mom extroardinaire Shannon got some double-doggy lovin' from Arlo and Ladybird!

Ben, now Finn, is the brown dog who is visiting with new pals Arlo and Sully.

May Day fun!

We were so thrilled to have 18 Lucky Pups join us for the May Day parade and festival in Kennebunk last weekend! It was great to see Barney, Maggie (now Ivy), Sunny, Sully, Arlo, Bear (now Finn), Reed (now Buddy) and Andy (now Bruin). Our adoptable cuties were there too - the G puppies like Gena and Gabby along with Ladybird, Courtney, Easton and Ethan.

Enjoy some photos from that day! Bruin is the white-looking shepherd at the top and Barney is the very relaxed golden dog at the bottom. The two black dogs are Sully (adopted two years ago!) and one of the available "G" puppies.

Beware of Garden Hazards for your Pets!

We have recently been forwarded the post about cocoa mulch many times (and its dangers to our pets). We thought we'd research it and help get the word out. While no one can find a documented death of a pet directly related, there are suspected serious illnesses after dogs, cats, and rabbits were exposed to cocoa mulch. Humans like to use it because it smells good to us, but it does to our pets too! There are MANY other outdoor hazards for our pets as well - some types of perennial plants and all types of chemicals whether they are used for killing weeds, repelling ticks, or growing our plants bigger.

Just be aware of what you are using on your lawn and garden and what affect it could have if eaten by curious pets (it is a TOTAL myth that animals avoid eating what is bad for them!) We have also been told of problems from pets eating spoiled food in the compost pile, rat poison, beer that is left out to kill slugs, standing water in kiddie pools or trash barrel lids, ice melt products and windshield washer fluid.

We'll also take this minute to remind you that your rescue dog is a flight risk and should be kept on leash or lead at all times until you have trained him or her thoroughly to come back to you with and without distractions. Fearful dogs as well as curious ones are their own worst enemy. We love the 50-foot nylon leads as it gives the dog (and human) a little freedom but keeps them safe while working on the recall command. You can tie it to a cement block and it gives them some work to do and keeps them in your sight. We have many resources to help with training issues, behavior, fears etc - please contact us for help before the problem gets out of hand.


We all know it only takes a minute for a fatal mistake to occur.

Mickey needs you!

Poor Mickey! He is another victim of our economy, through no fault of his own. At 8 years old he finds himself confused and homeless. His family lost their home and can not take Mickey with them. A family member allowed him to live in their garage, but that's no way for an older guy to spend his days, especially when he was used to a home and family with his kids.

Mickey is in need of veterinary care, including neutering, updating of vaccines, and a consultation regarding his skin allergies.

Through it all, he is a sweet sweet boy. He was a little sensitive about his ears being touched and his foster mom discovered it's because his ears are painful and just a mess. She gently cleaned his ears and he was a real trooper - like he knew that he was going to feel better after!

Our wonderful vets are going to fix him up and get him ready for his forever home.

If you are willing to offer a home to an adult guy like Mickey you will be rewarded with love and loyalty for years to come!

Mickey is settling into his foster home where there are two female dogs, a cat and older kids. He is fine with everyone!

Great Day at Mary's Walk!

We so enjoyed ourselves at Mary's Walk yesterday, and helped raise money for a great cause, the Maine Cancer Foundation. Several of us in the rescue worked with Mary Kerry Libby, who the race is held in memory of. Her family and friends are incredible!

We LOVE seeing our alumni dogs! We had Kaleigh (now Jenny), Arlo, Reba and Chloe with us, and our adoptable big boy Wesley as well as Janet's own Blizzard girl!

Plan to join us next year for an even bigger Lucky Pup team!

We were thrilled to be part of the Grand Opening of Finish Forward Dogs, a new training studio in Saco. If you want to get your pooch trained, participate in doggy sports, or get some much-needed advice see Shannan and her crew at Finish forward! (www.finishforwarddogs.com) We were happy to have our adoptable dogs Tex (foxhound) and Lady (bloodhound) and thrilled to see our alumni dogs Meeka (brindle cutie), Frankie (the yellow puppy), and Baxter (cute little black dog).

Loading up for the journey back to Maine

The pups were ready to roll! The weather was much better than the previous day's travel, and the humans were organized and motivated. That all added up to make a pretty smooth day, even though we started to get nervous once or twice about fitting everybody. Some of the pairings we anticipated weren't working out so we had to separate and re-group dogs, and some of those E puppies were way bigger than we thought so they couldn't share small crates after all!
