Donation Sensation!

Sunday was a highlight of a day for our rescue -- it was the culmination of a humanitarian fundraising effort in support of one of our nation's heroes. Eric Pierce is an Army Sgt. who was stationed in Afhanistan. He and his unit had raised a litter of puppies and Eric had trained Sandy, a shepherd/husky mix, from the time she was just a few weeks old. Now that his unit was to return home, they were ordered to dispose of the dogs. Finding the idea less than bearable, Eric and his fellow soldiers drove the three young dogs 12 miles down the road to an area they hoped would be safe. All three of the dogs made their way back to the base, so the soldiers committed to taking them home. The cost was pretty significant, at $2,900.00 each. Eric sent a message to his mom, Maddy, asking for friends and family to help. Lucky Pup Rescue volunteers donated, military veterans and active duty personnel donated and kind strangers donated. Not only was Eric able to fly Sandy home with the help of "Tigger House", a rescue in Kabul, but the extra money raised was put to good use. A donation was sent to Tigger House, and Eric's sister and mom went shopping. Maddy and Christine Pierce purchased supplies for their local humane society as well as Lucky Pup Rescue. On Sunday, Janet and Sue drove from Kennebunk to North Anson, Maine and filled their two vehicles with the copious donations of dog food, crates, leashes, collars and flea/tick preventative that had been purchased for the rescue. The Pierces also set aside some funds at Southern Maine Veterinary Care to help with medical costs of the rescue dogs. Their generous donations will allow the rescue to breathe a little easier and save even more dogs. Since we are non-profit we are funded completely by the adoption fees, private donations, and fundraising. Many of the dogs require care that exceeds the $300.00 adoption fee so this generous donation from the Pierces will allow us to rescue more dogs in need and take on another case like Scrappy Doo or Ivy who needs more medical care than shelters and private citizens can support. We can't thank them enough!

Sandy has been living with Eric's sister Christine and her family but will be returning to Tennessee with Eric shortly and she will be reunited with two of her brothers who also returned to the states with their adopted dads.

May Day

What a beautiful day in downtown Kennebunk! We enjoyed the parade and had several Lucky Pup alumni and foster dogs. Our alumni were Sully, Captain, Arlo and Rhett - and the available sweeties were Caroline, Rocky and Ivy. We also had a booth with a carnival game and items for sale -- the fleece dog toys were a big hit! Check out the pics.

Puppy LOVE!

Oh my gracious! Our Arkansas friends Lisa, Leanne, and Cissy arrived yesterday with 20 dogs! We are so excited, and we spent the day snuggling with puppies! Check out pictures below! Of these we have approx. 6 available for adoption - Mason, Maddox, Jeremy, Jerry, Jason and Jacob, Maureen and Molly, and Caroline. You can see all of them under "available pets" at www.luckypuprescue.org. I think we'll have to do this in more than one post. So these pictures have the "J pups" - Jenny, Jeremy, Jerry, Jacob, and Jason.

Mighty Moe is doing great!

Moe has been here a few weeks now and is already starting to shed pounds and inches. He is such a sweetheart and his foster family has all great things to say about him. He likes the teenagers and the female dog and is doing great with adult males now. He loves everyone he meets and is just a happy guy! Could your active family be the right one for him? Scrappy Doo needs his vision!

His foster mom in Arkansas says "Scrappy is the sweetest dog! We believe him to be a 2-3 year old schnauzer/poodle mix. He is housetrained, great with kids and absolutely LOVES to go for rides in the car! He would love nothing more than to be adopted by a family where he can receive the love and attention he deserves. Sadly, Scrappy was diagnosed with a genetic eye condition. He was born without tear glands. This went untreated for so long in his previous “home” that he has lost all vision in his right eye and part of the vision in the left. It is only a matter of time before he will go completely blind. We were thrilled to hear that there is a surgery available to help Scrappy and save his vision, but it is very expensive. The cost for the procedure (the doctor will route part of his salivary gland to his left eye and remove the non-functioning right eye) is 1800.00. We know it is a lot of money, but Scrappy so deserves a chance at a good life. He has had such a rough start, but still manages to wag his tail and jump up in his foster mom’s arms for kisses. He also stands patiently while his eyes are treated several times a day with drops to help keep him comfortable. He is so grateful to finally have someone to take care of him! Ivy needs you!

Ivy is one of our sweeties who needs sponsorship funds. She has come to us after going through absolute torture -- she was run over by a car in September and crawled up on a porch. When the people came out in the morning, she pulled herself with her two front legs and hid underneath a car. They had to jack up the car to get her out. Since she was a stray, they could have easily euthanized her then and ended the life of this sweetie. Luckily the medical staff saw something special in the eyes of this girl. After three surgeries, an external fixation device, and battling infections that threatened her legs and life, Ivy has overcome every obstacle and is now here in Maine in foster care. She still needs to get spayed after she gains some weight and gets herself medically stable. She is battling osteomyelitis and demodex and winning those battles as well. Her leftover bill from Arkansas is, remarkably, only around 800.00 -- and a huge thank you needs to go out to the Shelby Animal Hospital in Memphis for their donation of a lot of care and boarding -- and her bills here are already around 300.00. Smokey is a beautiful boy!

Smokey is a gorgeous adult Catahoula Leopard Dog mix. His coloring is so beautiful; you have to see it in person to appreciate it, it's almost a shimmery silver. He is a big boy who would love a forever home in your family. He loves older kids but can be a little bossy with younger kids and cats. A furry female playmate would be great, or Smokey could be an only-dog. He is house-trained, crate-trained and ready to join your family. Party Time at Rumble Tumble!

Sometimes you just have to take time out to play! That's exactly what we did Friday night and we had a great time and raised some much-needed funds for the rescue. Rumble Tumble is a fantastic spot for the kids to play, take a class or have a birthday party. We can't wait to go back!
