Update on Ladybird!

Ladybird's adopters recently sent an update on this sweet girl! Read on:

We have discovered that she LOVES the water. I was taking her for a walk on a particularly hot afternoon so I thought I'd take her down to the river in the park in Dover. She proceeded to walk into the water until it was half-way up her legs and just layed down! Then she swam out a bit further and started dunking her head in the water, blowing water out her nose. She did this for about 10 minutes while I just watched and laughed. I had never seen another dog do this before; it was truly precious. Since then, I have been sure to bring her to the river often and have ventured to Rye beach and Wagon Hill Farm/Great Bay Estaury several times.

She is doing very well on our walks. She has gotten better with bicycles and motorcycles, only barking occasionally when they are close up. She still barks and becomes a bit agitated around other dogs, but we're working on it. The vet suggested I bring treats on our walks, getting her to sit before the dogs come upon us and distracting her with petting and treats. So far it has only minor success, but were optimistic that she can learn to behave better around other dogs when on the leash. She's great with children, sitting docily while they pet and prod her, all the while wagging her tail.

Overall, Ladybird seems to have settled into her new environment and is very happy, always with the tail wag. She has even become her cuddle-bug self with us. Her favorite spot is at my feet with her chin resting on me. She also has claimed her role as co-pilot illustrated by the picture. We love her dearly, and are thrilled to have been given the opportunity to give her a forever home. She is a truly wonderful dog with an amazing personality.

Sarah needs our help!

Poor sweet Sarah!

She is a beautiful little senior Dachshund who was adopted by a wonderful family. When she originally came into rescue after being abandoned, her toenails were so long that she could not even walk! Her ears were in such bad shape they were crusted shut, and her mom spent many hours gently cleaning them to open up the canals, but it has since been
discovered that she will require $1,000 surgery to repair her ear canal because of the very severe infections. When her mom opened them up at first she regained some of the hearing that was completely gone, but now she is losing that and is in pain because of the damage. Her current family loves her so much but is having a difficult time paying for this expensive surgery so we are asking for any help from our wonderful rescue community. Even $5.00 would be appreciated so very much!

Ivy's life was saved too - please vote!

Beautiful Ivy is another testimony to the power of love, perseverance and overcoming overwhelming odds.

When she was just a young girl, Ivy was run over by a car. She crawled up onto a woman's porch, dragging her hind legs, and laid there all night until someone came out in the morning. In spite of barely being able to move, she wagged her tail and waited for help. Ivy was immediately brought to the hospital where it was all bad news. She had four fractures in her back legs and required immediate surgery. After a total of three surgeries where MUCH hardware was installed, Ivy had an external fixation device on the more unstable leg and had to be carried in and out to go to the bathroom. After many months of care and some complications, including osteomyelitis (a bone infection) it looked like she might end up requiring an amputation after all! Once she came north to us, our wonderful vets treated her and helped her avoid losing her leg. She got strong very quickly and just wanted to play, play, play! After re-gaining strength and re-learning how to use those muscles and repaired limbs she was adopted into a loving forever home in southern Maine and is doing amazing. You won't believe the first picture of a frail and tentative girl is even her! The second picture is Ivy in her new life - the joy in that picture says it all - it shows you that she was worth every penny it took to save her - many thousands of pennies!

Jadea asks for your vote too!

Jadea is a miracle dog but she would have never survived without people taking a chance on her and putting a lot of time and money into her care.

Over a year ago, she was found on the side of the expressway in the south - starving, lifeless, and completely broken. No one knows how long she laid out there on the side of the road suffering and starving. A caring person saw her raise her head and stopped to pick her up, starting her long journey to recovery. A rescue volunteer was mobilized and brought her to a wonderful animal hospital where they began the process of putting Jadea back together. Many would have given up right then - Jadea was emaciated beyond belief, she was heartworm positive, she was infested with intestinal parasites, had rips in both her ears, scars and cuts all over and to top it off she had a crushed pelvis and broken femur! Treatment had to wait on her broken bones for over a week because she was too unstable to operate on. Her surgeries had to be split up because there was so much damage. Both hips had to be repaired and have screws placed to secure them. She also had to have her femur plated to hold it together. Her recovery has been both long and painful but she never stopped loving and wagging her tail through it. No one could look into her eyes and tell Jadea she wasn't worth it. After almost a year she was brought north into a loving foster home, and months later she was adopted into a wonderful family with a canine buddy and people who love her for the amazing girl she is.

Wesley was abandoned as a young puppy at a southern shelter. He came north and was adopted, only to be turned back in to us after he became a big pushy puppy who needed discipline. At that time he was also Lyme positive and Heartworm positive. After almost $1,000.00 of care, he has become a loving, marvelous guy who is ready for a forever home of his own. He needs experienced dog owners to help him continue to be a great and loyal companion. Wesley loves the water, playing soccer, taking walks, and playing with other dogs and his humans. He enjoys riding in the car and is such a handsome big guy at about 85 lbs.
Without adoption fees from our other dogs as well as donations and our marvelous vets, we wouldn't be able to care for Wesley and so many others like him.

Gage is a beautiful puppy at about 8 months old. When he was younger he got hit by a car! He was saved by wonderful vets but it damaged his hip more than they knew at the time. He now needs surgery which will set us back over $1000.00. We will do it because we can't let anything bad happen to Gage, and he is SO worth it - a sweet boy who is in foster care loving life with 4 other dogs, 2 cats and 2 little kids. He will be able to keep up with them all so much better after his surgery. Maybe you can't adopt or foster right now, or can't contribute to Gage's surgery financially.
