Each year, more than six million pets enter animal shelters in the United States. One million more pets will lose their homes to the financial crisis and will be cared for by shelters and rescues already hard hit by declines in adoptions and financial donations. In 2009, 300 dog lovers and their 400 adorable pooches sprang into action to provide some assistance. Under cover of darkness, these pups and owners crossed the Brooklyn Bridge to illuminate the cause and raise money to help shelters and rescues provide for the additional pets under their care. That first “Pup Crawl” raised thousands of dollars for animal shelters and rescue groups in New York City, as well as Florida and California (two of the states hardest hit by the foreclosure crisis.)
The second Brooklyn Bridge Pup Crawl will take place on April 16, 2011 and we’re working to spread the puppy love to animal organizations across the country. This year, we’re thrilled to have The Humane Society of The United States on board as a partner to help draw attention to the impact of the financial crisis on our furry friends — and the organizations that are trying to protect them.
